To remain competitive, efficiency and return on your corporate training investment need to be assessed. It is critically important to verify you are getting the most “bang for your buck” from your training budget. This is especially true during these critical times when everyone who still has a job needs to be continuously inspired to work at peak efficiency.

Why is corporate training becoming more important?

Training keeps increasing in importance due to a number of factors, for instance:

Markets are improving and evolving in quicker, more unforgiving cycles. Overlooking or ignoring the latest developments can quickly make your company a has-been.

Each customer/end user needs to feel special or they can easily take their business and loyalty somewhere else.

Employees need to be stimulated and inspired to keep them loyal and performing at peak efficiency.

Training provides an incredible communication/feedback/idea channel from the front lines to the boardroom and back.

With the increasing importance of corporate training, the more you can accurately measure and assess the value and return of each training dollar/euro/crown/etc. spent, the better you will be able to optimise this important process and keep your organisation viable.

To get an accurate reading, any assessment should be done by a competent third party. Doing it internally is becomes too tempting for stake holders to massage the results for personal or political reasons. Regardless of who you choose, the sooner you can get an accurate reading of how powerful and up to date your training investment is, the more you can fine tune it for optimal performance.

A comprehensive training assessment needs to look at the following areas:

Goals and objectives

What do you want to achieve?

Customer needs, wants and wishes

What are the desires and expectations of those using your training

GAP analysis: Current versus Future performance

How is working compared to how it can work?

Recommendations

What, specifically, can be done to improve it?

Analysing at least 9 areas including: strategy, processes, people, systems and distribution, a measurable assessment can then be made, followed by specific recommendations for improvement. Measurable results can range from some simple adjustments to outsourcing your entire training department to a pure-play training organisation, for maximum efficiency and ROI.

If you are interested in a powerful and proven assessment tool, we would be very interested to present our STA+R (Systematic Training Audit and Recommendation) tool. It provides an accurate assessment of your current training offering, compared to current best practices plus, concrete recommendations as to the most efficient way to improve your results.

Please contact us if you are interested in optimising your Corporate Training offer

Tue, 22 Mar 2022 06:41:58 +0000 augustin 118 at https://www.caginternationalag.com Business Agility Means Transforming Fear into Decisive Action https://www.caginternationalag.com/blog/business-agility-means-transforming-fear-decisive-action Business Agility Means Transforming Fear into Decisive Action augustin Thu, 08/25/2022 - 13:19

By

Kurt Larsson

2020-04-07

Business Agility depends upon cool, decisive thinking.

This, in turn, leads to quicker, more effective action, even if it turns out to be wrong. What is the biggest impediment and destroyer of this important foundation to Business Agility? FEAR and uncertainty. In challenging times like these, it is easy to get swept away in fear, worry and anxiety. What if anything can we do about it?

"…destroy the village in order to save it"

This famous quote from the Vietnam War clearly shows the cruel absurdity that can occur when fear takes over. Whether you are a high-ranking leader, decision maker or just a worried parent, fear and anxiety can push you to take misguided actions leading to devastating results.

Right now, the village in question may be your personal part of the world’s economic system. With half the world’s population in lockdown, with constant and frightening news stories about how bad things are, people have both voluntarily and been forced to close their wallets. This is an unprecedented threat to many organizations, both small and large. If you are in charge of one of them you absolutely have every reason to be scared. Yet, as W. Erhard once famously said, “Being reasonable leaves you with reasons, not results”. To make it through this crisis you need results. This means transforming your fears into actionable and measurable results.

"Fear is excitement out of present time". Patrick Collard

What I believe my dear, departed friend meant was that with both fear and excitement you experience the same bodily sensations. Whether riding a roller-coaster or facing bankruptcy, we humans normally experience one or more of the following signs of an adrenaline rush:

· shortness of breath

· faster heartbeat

· sweaty palms

· increased tension

Yet what differentiates a healthy feeling of excitement and exhilaration from fear, worry and anxiety is how present you currently are. Fear takes you out of the reality of here and now by forcing you into your head and its deepest and most worrisome thoughts. You separate from the reality in front of you and begin remembering, comparing, reasoning, analysing, justifying and creating worst case scenarios. In the process you lose all connection with the present.

Whereas, when you feel excited, the feeling in your body is the same, but without the mental thoughts and worry. You are more grounded, connected, clear-headed and ready to dance with what is happening in front of you, here and now. To put it another way, “The mind separates and the heart unites”.

The Trick? Transforming fear to excitement

The key to this transformation is a two-step process that is often too simple for complicated minds. First, instead of deeper thinking, your focus needs to be on what you are feeling. If feeling present is the tool to calm your fears, then when is the only time you can feel something?

Put another way:

· When do you feel something that happened yesterday?

For instance, you may remember having felt something uncomfortable at a critical management meeting yesterday, but aren’t your feelings about yesterday’s meeting actually occurring here and now?

· When do you feel something that may happen tomorrow?

You may sense a strong premonition of tomorrow’s big, exciting sales meeting or the fear of not being able to pay some bills which must settle tomorrow, but when do you actually experience these feelings?

The only time you can ever feel something is here and now, in present time!

Thus, the more you dare to practice feeling those, butterflies in your stomach, that pain in your lower back, that anxious, tight feeling in your chest, congratulations, the more present you currently are! A quick check to see that this simple tool is working is to note when your fears, worries or anxieties return. Are they in the form of fearful thoughts first, followed by feelings of those fears? If so, take a deep breath, then refocus on feelings your body is experiencing and try to objectively sense and define them. This process will force you out of your head’s darkest thoughts and back into the glorious presence of your body, its sensations and its current surroundings. Then you can dance!

Amplifying Presence

Step Two is improving your ability to feel. Again, if sensing what is happening in your body is the key to pull you back into the present, how can you consciously amplify this process?

The easiest way to do this is through slow, conscious and deliberate breathing. The deeper and more aware you become of where your breath easily flows within your body, the more relaxed and calm you will feel. The more relaxed you become the easier it is to feel more and thus become even more present. In this softer state you also become much more open and receptive to new information as well as new possible solutions. In this relaxed and present atmosphere, do you think you have more ability and agility to calmly and consciously respond to the challenges you are facing? Can this state increase your chances for success?

Conclusion: Feel, breathe, decide, act.

Don’t believe anything written above! That is until you consciously and deliberately try it yourself. A while back and like a fish out of water, I realised I had lived in constant fear for most of my life. It took me a long while to admit it and then to even consider that there was another way. I took this to the (ridiculous) point that when I began to lose my fears, I would get scared that there was something wrong. I feared I was guilty of missing something and that stressed me too. Finally, after years of training to feel first, then breathe lots, calmly reflect, decide, respond and finally act, I am currently experiencing very little fear, anxiety or worry regarding our latest and most severe collective crisis. A pleasant and appreciated surprise!

It is my sincere hope that these simple tips above will help you focus more on taking responsible, agile decisions and actions and then enjoying the profitable results they produce. Well, if you are actively mastering business agility you would have at least been clearly aware that cycles are shortening and volatility is increasing.

This information dictates that relying on what has worked in the past is guaranteed to be insufficient to plan for tomorrow. Is thinking like this easy? NO! Planning for and responding to something that has never happened before goes against how we, as humans, are programmed to react. Excluding some minor hiccups, we have been in a continuous bull market since 1982! This is generational success and many of today’s decision makers have never experienced a prolonged down market in their entire career.

We humans are, first and foremost, creatures of habit. That means most of us naturally choose the safe and comfortable least-path-of-resistance. We are programmed to be lazy. In a crisis, we would much rather react (automatically act again) than respond (reflect, choose, then answer back). Responding demands creativity and takes more resources, time and energy. Responding also measurably increases the risk and reward of acting on your decision!

Looking back, the signals for a major crash have been flashing for quite some time, but suggesting, even to friends, that a bust of this magnitude could occur, so swiftly and quickly, would have been met by scorn or disbelief. Never forget, to think “outside of the box” puts you in direct opposition to business as usual. This makes you seem, to your family, friends and colleagues, a little weird at best and a killjoy at worst. Yet just like Mosabumi Hosano and Charles Joughin discovered by jumping off the Titanic and being rescued by the lifeboats, sometimes thinking/acting differently can save your reputation and your life. In comparison, the reputation and ultimately the life of J. Bruce Ismay, Chairman and Managing Director of the White Star Line (which owned the Titanic) was ruined by him sneaking into one of the lifeboats and surviving. He was vilified for being a coward for the rest of his life.

With the virus and crash, what does mastering business agility look like right now?

In Titanical terms it means you have to either avoid those icebergs or barring that, plug the leaks before you sail any faster. If your sales drop off a cliff and negative cashflow is draining you dry, you need to radically cut costs to plug the hole… FAST! This usually requires letting some talented people go. It also means cutting back on non-core competencies and refocusing all your money, energy and resources on what you do best. Customer sales are all that matter!

Cut Costs AND improve Customer Loyalty!

One of the remaining areas that many medium to large companies feel they must have, yet still consider a costly burden is corporate training. Whether for internal development or for increased customer loyalty, training is still a very inefficient, often forgotten backwater for all but the most effective companies. How can you drastically cut costs, increase your business agility as well as increase your ability to create more loyal customers?

Consider Carveout Sourcing your training department

Even having professional training experts train your customers requires a ramping up period.

They start by transitioning (firing) many of the current training staff. There goes their motivation. Have you ever had to train your replacement after being given a pink slip? Your newly outsourced training experts may be experts at training, but they are not experts on your training or satisfying your customers! Your valued customers will usually suffer from both the training they receive and from the newer, poorly trained staff, trained by those who are leaving. Especially in a crisis, where every customer interaction counts, can you afford this?

The alternative is what is called Carveout Sourcing and that is what we love to do. This is where your existing training department is “carved out” and sold to a pure-play training company. One specialized in absorbing and improving professional trainers. Your staff, who know your routines and customers, remain, but are now employees of this integrated carveout. They are warmly welcomed into an environment focused on providing world-class training and are given the tools and resources to “up” their game. They get the latest tools, receive training and coaching from their new colleagues on how to further improve what they are already good at. They also learn new tools and tricks to make learning about your products and company even more fun and effective. The result is deeper understanding and increased loyalty.

Critical Information, Direct from the Source!

Your staff will also be trained to become one of the best two-way information channels from the end user, up to your board and back again. Just like service personnel, trainers have a unique and powerful role when training both staff and customers. Trainers are both non-threatening and make things work easier. They are viewed as service instead of sales. This high degree of trust means they can ask the most curious questions and receive honest answers. Could the information they discover help with your future product development, faster- more effective sales cycles and increased customer satisfaction and loyalty?

Save Money Too!

All this can be usually be done for between 20 to 25% less than what it is currently costing and, if you think about it, how could the training ever be worse than it was, before the carveout! If this sounds interesting and timely, I’d love to hear from you.
